The 2019 Draft Lottery: A Night Cheers and Tears

The Night the Lottery Changed Forever

It was a night for the ages in Chicago as the draft order was announced. We had the New York Knicks missing out on the first pick to the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers 14% not even landing them in the top four. The New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies taking 6% odds and cashing in big time landing the top two selections. This was the night that tanking officially died. There is now a 0% guarantee it will be an easy franchise fix. The league has officially found a way to change the league for the better with these new lottery odds.

The Winners

The New Orleans Pelicans defied the odds and will now be bringing in their next franchise superstar (Zion Williamson). If they can swing a huge trade value for Anthony Davis the Pelicans may not be in bad shape. The 6% was all it took and now people in New Orleans can have hope for the future.

The Memphis Grizzlies also took 6% to the bank and cashed out with the second overall pick. It seems Ja Morant will be the future PG of the franchise and everyone in Memphis should be excited. Pairing him up with Jaren Jackson Jr moving forward should lead to better days down the line.

The Los Angeles Lakers took 2% and landed the 4th pick. That is something LeBron James is probably still smiling about. They now get to bring in another young talent to learn from the King… or do they use it as a trade piece?

The Losers

The Phoenix Suns truly took a gut punch in this lottery. They can always take another one of the promising point guards in this draft at sixth overall though. The world knows they wanted Ja Morant but it would take a kings ransom to pull off a trade with Memphis to get into position to do so. The 14% odds did not save the Suns from another crushing disappointment.

The Atlanta Hawks failed to land a single top five pick with two lottery picks. The Mavericks have to be happy with the result of this trade during last years draft. Atlanta will now add two high upside players when they were hoping to land the day one superstar.

The New York Knicks lost out on the Zion sweepstakes. They will be fine when they land Kevin Durant and other max caliber talents. Let’s use losers as a short term label here

Moving forward we will know what to expect from the NBA Draft Lottery which is the unexpected. Many downplayed the shifting odds but that will not happen again. This is an overwhelming positive for the league and fans alike moving forward.
