Russell is the greatest champion in all of sports. No one will ever come close to 11 titles in 13 seasons, at least not in team sports. Russell was the undisputed leader of those Celtics teams’, a defensive stalwart, and one of the All-Time rebounders.
However, if you asked 100 NBA guru’s what the most important skill a basketball player can possess is, about 90 would say it is the ability to score the basketball. That is the one area where Russell did not excel, with a modest 15.1 PPG. Before you attribute this to the era, remember Wilt Chamberlin scored 100 points in a game during this time period.
Although he is the greatest champion, Bill Russell can’t be the G.O.A.T or the Best ever if he did not score especially well.
